Early Intervention (Phase 1) Orthodontics

When it comes to a child’s smile, timing matters. Early intervention — often called Phase 1 orthodontics — addresses developing problems while a child is still growing, sometimes preventing more serious issues down the road. It is one of the most powerful tools in pediatric orthodontics.

Why Age 7?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends every child have a first orthodontic check-up by age 7. By this age, enough permanent teeth have come in for us to spot potential concerns early — even if treatment is not needed right away.

What Phase 1 Can Do

  • Guide jaw growth to create room for incoming teeth
  • Correct crossbites, severe crowding, and harmful habits
  • Reduce the risk of needing tooth extractions later
  • Make a future Phase 2 treatment simpler and shorter

How It Works

Phase 1 often uses appliances like expanders or partial appliances and works hand-in-hand with dentofacial orthopedics. Not every child needs early treatment — sometimes we simply monitor growth until the time is right.

A Stress-Free Start

An early visit does not mean starting treatment right away. It means peace of mind and a plan. Our welcoming office and Children Club make that first experience fun rather than scary.
